Richmond Rugby Community Department

The Richmond Rugby Community Department is run in partnership with Community Group Ltd and was launched in July 2017. Our aim is to engage with local schools, colleges and to support local community initiatives.

In the relative short space of time the department has operated, our school engagement has grown year on year, we now support and deliver rugby coaching in nine different local primary/preparatory schools, six senior schools and three sixth forms/colleges. Last academic year saw the department coach for over 1,500 hours in schools to over 1,000 children. We also operate a joint Rugby Academy programme with local school Orleans Park in Twickenham.

All of our partner schools take part in community events at various senior team fixtures throughout the course of the season. This enables students/parents/siblings/teachers to experience Richmond Rugby on match days. Last season saw over 200 local boys and girls attend specialist coaching sessions prior to our senior matches and also saw them taking part in guards of honour when the teams come onto the pitch.

As well as school engagement the department runs a unique weekly rugby programme in Her Majesties Youth Offenders Institute – Feltham A, delivering coaching and mentoring the young men in the institute. This is the only rugby programme of its type in the Prison Service for young men under the age of 18.

During school holidays the community team run rugby camps at the club enabling our mini and youth teams to improve their skills with the clubs senior coaching team helping out at most camps. Our camps are open to all to all, not just Richmond members.

On Sundays our team of community coaches assist/run our various youth teams (Under 12s - Under 18s). Our Head of Community is also responsible for ensuring all our volunteer coaches are suitably qualified and DBS checked.

All our community coaches are all fully RFU/World Rugby coaching qualified and all have been DBS checked. Most of our coaches are also players at the club – enabling us to offer schools, what we believe to be a unique coaching resource with their high levels of playing experience and expertise.
