The Breakdown: Richmond Women Defeated 42-7 By Saracens Women

Richmond Women fought strongly against an impressive Saracens Women side but ultimately fell to a 42-7 defeat at the Athletic Ground.

With Storm Dennis bearing down on South West London, this rescheduled Tyrrells Premier 15s clash was always going to be a tough and physical affair in atrocious conditions.

Richmond looking for their second win of the season burst out of the blocks in the fourth minute with skipper Ro Burnfield barging her way over the line from close range. Her try was converted by the experienced Abi Chamberlain and the home side had the early 7-0 lead.

It was an outstanding start for Mike Panoho’s side, who last played against Gloucester-Hartpury in January, and looked a refreshed, determined squad eager to attack aggressively against the undefeated Saracens.

With both sides trading blows early, trying to maintain possession in the slippery and blustery conditions was proving extremely difficult.

Saracens soon gained the attacking momentum and crossed for their first try in the 18th minute. Jodie Rettie was the scorer and her kick was neatly converted by Lisa Martin.

For the next 15 minutes the match continued to be a dogged affair with the scores locked at 7-7. Both sides continued to rip into each, attempting to find consistency in both attack and defence.

Despite the Richmond crowd urging their team on with loud support from the stands, Sarries crossed for their second try in the 33rd minute, with prop Rocky Clark slicing through to take a 14-7 lead into the half-time break.

Richmond started the second half with confident intent but the experienced Sarries soon started to take control. By the 52nd minute they had crossed for two quick tries to blow the score out to 28-7.

With the bonus point secured they continued to attack the Richmond line and forced a further two tries before the full-time whistle through Vicky Fleetwood and Poppy Cleall. Martin continued her fine form with the boot, slotting all seven attempts as the visitors moved to the top of the table with a hard-fought 42-7 win.

Richmond's next Premier 15s fixture is away against DMP Sharks on Saturday 21st March (KO 5pm).

Meanwhile, the Richmond Women’s 2nd XV were defeated 58-3 by Saracens Women in the Development League.
