The Breakdown: Richmond Women Defeated By Gloucester-Hartpury

Richmond Women fought gallantly against Gloucester-Hartpury Women but ultimately fell to their tenth loss of the Tyrrells Premier 15s season, suffering a 20-0 defeat.

On a cold afternoon at the Athletic Ground in front of strong home crowd, Richmond conceded four first half tries to head into the break with their backs against the wall.

The visitors, who sit fourth on the table, opened the scoring in the eighth minute through wing Kelly Smith. Her score followed a superb intercept from fly-half Ceri Large who broke through before passing to Smith to run away and score.

Richmond continued to apply plenty of pressure on the Gloucester defence but were unable to maintain attacking possession, giving away too many penalties and making numerous mistakes at crucial moments.

Gloucester took full advantage of Richmond’s inaccuracy scoring three more unconverted tries through Mia Venner (15th min), Ellie Underwood (19th min) and skipper Natasha Hunt (30th min).

Heading into second half down 20-0 Richmond looked determined to hit back strongly and claw their way back into the fixture.

But in a frustrating 40 minutes for both sides and those in attendance at the RAG, the score remained locked at 20-0 with neither team able to find the momentum or attacking spark required.

To Richmond’s credit, led by their inspiring skipper Rowena Burnfield, they lifted their defensive intensity in the second half and prevented Gloucester from running away with a big win.

They fought strongly to the final minute and even came close to scoring late in the match with Gloucester’s Ti Tauasosi sent to the sin-bin in the 80th minute for a deliberate knock-on.

But again Gloucester withstood the Richmond onslaught to secure their four-try win and maintain their play-off hopes.

Meanwhile, the Richmond Women’s 2nd XV were defeated 5-50 by Gloucester-Hartpury in the Development League.
