Richmond Rugby Statement: Tyrrells Premier 15s
Following today’s announcement from the RFU regarding the Tyrrells Premier 15s audit results, Richmond Rugby have made the following statement:
Richmond Rugby were disappointed to be named as one of the four clubs required to re-tender to remain in the Tyrrells Premier 15s.
As a club we have supported and promoted elite women’s rugby for nearly 35 years. We have a rich history and to this day remain one of the most successful women’s clubs in world rugby. We strongly believe we should remain in this competition and have informed the RFU of our decision to re-tender.
We are fully committed to every aspect of our Women’s Programme and despite there being an obvious shift from the RFU toward favouring women’s clubs who are aligned to a men’s premiership side, we are determined to pursue every possible means to ensure Richmond can remain a Tyrrells Premier 15s club.
Laura Jenkins, Richmond Rugby Director, said: “Whilst we are disappointed by the RFU’s decision to make the club re-tender for its place in the Tyrrells Premier 15s, it remains our view that there is a place for Richmond in elite women’s rugby and we will be retendering. Results have gone against us over the last few seasons, however Richmond will continue to do things the “Richmond Way”. It remains our mission to provide elite playing opportunities within a community club whilst remaining financially sustainable.
“We are very grateful to all our players, coaches, staff, volunteers, sponsors and fans, as well as the broader Richmond community, for all of their hard work and support over the seasons. We look forward to continuing our work with the RFU and other clubs to promote the growth and engagement within the women’s game for many seasons to come.”
