Matt “Gold Top” Jewers joined Richmond from school in the late 70’s and played for the First XV through to the Heavies as a very competitive wing forward. A skilled ball player, he was part of the strong Richmond 7s teams of the early 80’s. Matt also played for and toured with Grasshoppers RFC, Old Priorians , the Solarians and the Turks Head RFC, with whom he went on their world tour.
His nickname Gold Top was earned as a result of his party piece, often repeated at Richmond Christmas reviews, much to the discomfort of some members! He was once asked to preform the trick by the Crown Prince of Malaysia and he also gets a mention in Gavin Hastings autobiography.
Matt attended the recent Heavies 50th lunch with many old friends and was on glowing form, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him
Our deepest condolences and sympathies to his partner Pamela and his family.
Matt’s funeral will be held at 1.20pm on July 6th at Mortlake crematorium, attendance is by invitation only please . The funeral service will be screened live in the Richmond Clubhouse where the bar will be open from 12.30 and there will be a celebration of Matt’s life at the Club following the service to which all are welcome.
