BLACKHEATH 12 VS RICHMOND 45

The very oldest rugby club fixture was resumed post Covid on Friday evening with an excellent run out for hosts Blackheath and visiting Richmond. Given recent weather the pitch was in excellent condition and both teams showed a desire to attack.

The match was three thirty minute periods with Blackheath making a strong start and scoring out wide through Nick Foster after just  five minutes. The Richmond response was swift, skipper Mark Bright resuming his regular try scoring routine. This was quickly followed by an excellent Richmond driving maul try with both tries converted by the impressive Ted Landray.

Richmond made fifteen changes at the break with Blackheath making a handful. Richmond full back Owain James did very well to collect and score from an accurate Hamish Graham kick and this was followed after a series of drives to the line by a short range try for lock Jake Monson. The third Richmond score of the second period was a well worked try by centre Zuriel Makele, converted by Jack Johnson.

In the final period a combination of strong defence and the ambition to offload out of the tackle  saw Richmond tries for centre Raz Patel and fly half Ted Landray. Another driving maul try saw hooker Callum Torpay added to the score sheet. Blackheath fought gallantly and played well throughout , especially at the breakdown, and were rewarded with an excellent try from Alex Witchell following a lineout peel. The final score of the night came for Richmond after a long passage of attacking play and was secured by fly half Jack Johnson.
