2. RICHMOND WOMEN'S HISTORY


Our Richmond Women remain one of the oldest and most successful women's rugby clubs on the planet.

OUR HISTORY

  • Founded in 1986. We became the first women's rugby club in the world to run two teams.
  • In 1986/87 the first Richmond Women's captain Mary Forsyth and her team gained their first honours, winning the National 7s. Under Dee Mills, they won the National League title a season later.
  • In 1998/99 Carol Isherwood and Pat Harris led Richmond to victory in the National Cup and the National Sevens.
  • Debbie Francis' side took the Championship of the National League in 1990/91 before winning the National Cup the following year.
  • In 1993/94 Mary Harrington's side added to the silverware by winning the National Cup once more.
  • In 1994/95 the team, led by Sue Butler, put two more 'pots' on display, winning the National League and the National Cup.
  • At the end of the 1995/96 season, we won the National 7s and carried on to win the National League the following year.
  • In 1999/2000 Nicky Coffin's team won the National 7s and the National Cup, which they went on to regain in 2002.
  • In 1999 Richmond's second team achieved glory in the Amsterdam 7s, an honour they went on to retain for a further three years.
  • In 2002/03 a Junior Academy was set up and the First XV finished second in the National Premiership 1. A year later the Third XV was named the Impalas.
  • In 2004/05 two Richmond teams reached the final of the Stoneygate 7s.
  • In 2006/06 under the leadership of Nicki Jupp and Dawn Mason, Richmond became National Cup winners for a record seventh time, adding the National 7s title by defeating Saracens.
  • In 2009/10 we won the Premiership title and went on to win again in 2010/11, 2011/12, 2013/14 and 2015/16. We finished Premiership runners-up in 2012/13 and 2014/15.
  • We also won the National Cup in 2015/16 and our Second XV won the Women's Championship South in 2015/16.
  • In 2017/18, 2018/19 , 2019/20 we played in the newly former Premier 15s, running a First XV and a Development Squad (Second XV).
  • From 2021/22 Richmond Women compete in the Women's Championship under new Head Coach Mark Cadogan, with a First XV and a Second XV.
