Our ground-breaking Rugby Programme in Her Majesty’s Youth Offenders Institute – Feltham was launched in 2019 and continued strongly in its second year.
We adapted the weekly sessions to include Strength and Conditioning sessions as well as mentoring meetings for the young men in the institution. Our programme is unique as it is still the only rugby engagement project in the Prison Services Juvenile (15 -18 years old) Estate.
Through our programme the inmates get an opportunity to take part in a rugby training session once a week for two hours. The long term aim of the programme is to offer pathways for these young men on release from prison, with the opportunity to continue to play rugby in their local area. We strongly believe that physical activity in a competitive environment linked with Rugby’s values can offer help to these young men an alternative to a life of crime.
An all new “Crime Prevent” project was also recently set up with funding and in partnership with the Metropolitan Police, Safer Schools Team and the MCC foundation. The aim of the project is to educate and mentor year 4 and 5 primary school children in deprived areas of West London. Providing after school and school holiday provision with the aim to raise awareness of grooming by gangs.
